Best Time to Visit Kashmir: A Month-by-Month Guide

7 April 20266 min readBy Favourite Travels Team

From spring tulips to winter snow at Gulmarg, here's exactly when to plan your Kashmir trip depending on what you want to experience.

Kashmir rewards different travellers at different times of year, so the "best" time genuinely depends on what you want to see.

April to June — Spring into Early Summer This is Kashmir's most popular window and for good reason. Srinagar's famous tulip gardens bloom in late March through April, Dal Lake is calm and clear for shikara rides, and daytime temperatures sit comfortably between 15°C and 25°C. Pahalgam and Gulmarg are lush green, and most mountain passes are accessible. This is the ideal season for first-time visitors, families, and anyone wanting the classic Kashmir postcard experience.

July to September — Monsoon and Late Summer Kashmir receives far less rainfall than mainland India during monsoon, making it a popular "monsoon escape" destination. Temperatures stay mild, gardens are at their greenest, and crowds thin out compared to peak spring season — meaning better hotel rates and a more relaxed houseboat experience on Dal Lake.

October — Autumn (Chinar Season) Many seasoned travellers consider October Kashmir's most photogenic month. The valley's famous Chinar trees turn brilliant shades of red and gold, days remain pleasantly mild, and nights start turning crisp. This is an excellent time for photography-focused trips and a quieter alternative to spring.

December to February — Winter and Snow For snow lovers, December through February transforms Gulmarg into one of India's best skiing and snowboarding destinations, with reliable powder snow and a functioning gondola. Srinagar itself gets light snowfall, and Dal Lake can partially freeze in extreme cold years. Pack heavily for sub-zero nights, but this is unmatched for snow photography and winter sports.

Our Recommendation For a first Kashmir trip covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg comfortably, Favourite The Holiday Makers recommends April to October. If snow activities are the priority, target late December through February and confirm Gulmarg gondola operations in advance, as weather-dependent closures do happen.
